In Flight

On this day, I was purposely trying to get a good flight shot. I had taken a ton of bird shots only a few days before and was looking for something a little more dramatic.
The shutter speed on this shot was 1/400, but the bird is still slightly blurred. I was shooting wide open at ISO 125, so note to self for next time, crank up the ISO a bit to get a crisper shot.
So, maybe f/5.6 is a little open for this kind of shot – you run the risk of focus issues, especially with moving wildlife. Still, I do like the depth of field in the branches – I think it really adds a lot to this photo. True, I trash a greater percentage of shots shooting wide open like this, but it’s worth the couple stunners you may get.
It’s amazing how bokeh-ey your photo can be at f/5.6 @ 400mm – absolutely beautiful. Hopefully, I can get my hands on the 100-400L again soon.
