Why are barns red?
Traditionally, barns were painted with a linseed oil mixture, sometimes containing milk and lime. The red color came with the addition of rust gathered from farm implements.

The rust, usually ferrous (iron) oxide or lead oxide, turned the paint red, but more importantly, it acted as a natural mold and fungicide, helping to preserve the barn wood.
