Thistle

I put up a birdfeeder a couple years ago and filled it with mixed birdseed. I never did get many birds, but I’ve been fighting thistles ever since. I spray them, I pull them up and dig them up. I stomp on them and curse them… and curse them… really more cursing then anything else.

I even adopted a scorched-earth policy, laying waste to dozens of them at a time. One week later, though, there were twice as many as there were before.

Towards the end of the summer, I gave up. I ran out of spray, patience and time. The ones in the front of the house have now died, giving me some pleasure watching them whither. There is one next to the garage that has flowered though and I decided to take a picture before I beat it mercilessly with a rake I had handy… and cursed it.

Today, the thistle looks surprisingly well and my neighbors continue to look at me kind of funny.
