Silkscreen Railroad

I started my professional design career in high school, working nights, summers and holidays as a screenprinter in a local shop. That was 15 years ago and the majority of printing was still done by hand… with old wood-framed, hand-stretched silkscreens and rubber squeegees. I still remember the process, the angle of the squeegee, when to flood the screen and when not to… I could step into a shop today and start making prints.

There is a definite “look” to silkscreened artwork and I tend to explore from time to time in my graphic design. I had never tried to capture that look in my photography though, and this is my first attempt.

The traincar and the landscape would be the silkscreened part… possibly printed on top of a photograph of the sky. The yellow-orange screen would be printed first, then probably spot dried. The black screen containing the details and shadows would then be printed over top.
