I carry a little moleskine notebook around with me… one that’s small enough to fit into my jacket pocket. I use it to take notes – reminders, thoughts, ideas, songs I hear on the radio, etc… but mostly, I use it to take notes about and record gps coordinates of photos that I take. This is called “geotagging”.

What is geotagging? According to Wikipedia:
“Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude, bearing, accuracy data, and place names”

As you can see in the photo above, each entry consists of two lines of numbers… the first being the latitude and the second the longitude of the exact location where I took a photo. I can then enter this information when uploading my photos to Flickr, so that I have a map of all of my photos.

There are electronic ways of recording this information – little gps receivers that add location data to photos on your memory card. There is even an add-on for Nikon cameras that fits into the hot shoe and automatically records gps data as the photo is being recorded to the memory card.

For now, I kind of like penciling the coordinates into my notebook. Kind of an old-school take on high-tech.
