HBW!
What does HBW mean? HBW = Happy Bokeh Wednesday – a term in the Flickr community.

What is Bokeh? According to Wikipedia, Bokeh (derived from Japanese bokeaji ボケ味, “blur”) is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field.

It was a lot colder when I took this than the photo would leave you to believe. 0º, but no wind, which made shots like this a lot easier. This was late afternoon and the sun was low, painting a yellow glow on the prairie plants.

The snow was pretty deep here – knee high when I stepped off the path to get a clear line to the subject. That’s nice though because it gives you a little support when you’re leaning out in an awkward position to get the shot. I do have to find my gaiters though – snow in the boots at 0º is not fun.

In the three hours I spent out at Cherokee Marsh that day, I only saw three other people. I think there is kind of a brotherhood that is understood when you pass someone out on the trail when it’s that cold. A mutual understanding that, yes, we realize how cold it is, and perhaps the cold has in fact frozen that part of our brain responsible for good judgment.

Lovely image. It just goes to show you that there’s always an artistic shot out there just waiting to be captured. Winter holds a special beauty and you’ve found it.
