Madison Reflections

This was my first photo that made Flickr’s Explore – in fact, it made the front page. Unfortunately, I didn’t even know what explore was at the time and I didn’t know enough to get a screen capture of the front page. Still, a few days into my Flickr life, this photo made explore… I didn’t even have any contacts yet.

This photo also represents my first foray into “serious” photography. I had just learned the “bulb” function on my camera, I had a telephoto lens and a cheap tripod… just enough to be dangerous.

I was fascinated with this location for the entire summer. I have a ridiculous number of shots of the Madison skyline from Olin Park. Hundreds. HUNDREDS. Why? Why so many shots of the same thing?

I found the lake to be a perfect metaphor for life and the world. When all was clam, the lake was beautiful… the reflections were amazing, the lights were incredible. Beauty that lied on the surface… and it was only visible when everything was completely calm. The slightest breeze, though, would reveal what was below the surface. Blackness… a void… disruption.

Still, look long enough, look hard enough and you start to see the beauty in the disruption.
