Autumn Mobile

Winter is an etching
Spring a watercolor
Summer an oil painting
And autumn a mosaic of them all.

Looking up while waking through the woods, I saw a tree above me that was already mostly bare. Only a few scattered red leaves still clung to the tree. It reminded me of a mobile – something you may see in an art museum. The black branches comprised the metal armature and the red leaves were pieces of red fabric or metal that were deliberately arranged… One large leaf was balanced by two smaller leaves and the whole piece hung under the canopy of the trees above in nature’s art gallery.

The shot was a difficult one to capture. I tried a couple different lenses, different apertures for ranges of depths of field and various perspectives. Still, I never did capture the scene successfully. The photo turned out okay on its own, but not as a good representation of what I saw. Maybe there are things in nature that are just too beautiful to be captured with a mechanical device.
