Loch Monona Nessies

statue3February, 1979 – the Statue of Liberty came to Madison, Wi. Created by sculptor and founding member of UW’s •Pail and Shovel Party, Tim Browning. Lady Liberty appeared to be sinking into the lake, only her eyes and torch sticking above the frozen surface.

I remember going down to the campus to see this when I was a kid, just 5 years old. I remember trying to imagine what tragedy could have befallen the statue that while on display, the whole thing would have sunk into the lake. I wondered if they would ever get it back out or if it would always be stuck there. Hey, I was 5 years old.

This latest installation of Browning’s work features a herd of sea monsters sticking their heads up above the Lake Monona ice. I will be posting more photos of this work in the upcoming days.

Browning’s public art is presented as part of the •Madison Arts Commision’s BLINK temporary art series.
